DIY Spaceship Craft

My oldest daughter has always been obsessed with the moon and space. It really wasn't a surprise when one day she told me she wants to go to the moon. So I instantly went into crafty mode and dug around the recycling bin for things to make something to help her imagination along.

Now we love imaginative play at my house. We try to use things we already have and it's always interesting to see what my children can come up with.

We had a few small and medium sized cardboard boxes we could use so we decided to make a toy spaceship. It was so much fun to make this and I think it turned out really cute. To complete our play we cut out some stars and meteors that we taped to the walls around the house. We also used a beige blanket to make a moon on the front room floor and then it was time for blast-off!

Materials:

  • Cardboard box

  • Paints and a paintbrush

  • Paper

  • Glue

  • Scissors

Directions:

1) Take your cardboard box and open up all the top flaps. Cut one of the smaller flaps to create a pointy triangle for the tip of the spaceship. Then cut the two side panels to create angled wings.

2) Get messy with some paint! We choose blue for our galactic project but choose whatever funky colors you want and even mix them up a little. Paint the flaps and sides of the box. Don't worry about painting the inside, we will cover that later with paper.

3) Once everything is dry take a solid black piece of paper to line the bottom of the spaceship and glue it down. Depending on the size of your box you may need several sheets. I also glued black paper to the inside back piece where the imaginative seats would be.

4) Grab a few pieces of white paper and draw the inside of the spaceship. We added a lot of buttons, levers and dials to create a little control panel. For the inside front piece of paper draw a window looking out into space with things like planets, moons or stars. Glue all the paper pieces to the inside of the box.

5) Finish up the outside of your spaceship with decorations like stickers, stripes and drawings. We had some star and crescent moon confetti left over from a party we were able to use too and gave our spaceship a name on the side.

Did you make this craft and how did it turn out? What are some other fun ideas for repurposing cardboard boxes that you have tried? Leave a comment below, I would love to hear your ideas and don't forget to subscribe for more fun ideas!
